FAQ’s on flight only holidays

While travel can be a fun and an exciting adventure, there are often travel terms and questions that can cause confusion. From airline fees to the travel agent terms, the world of flying can be a tough one to fully comprehend.

How long do I need to arrive at the airport before my flight?
Planning to check in at the airport? We recommend arriving at the check-in and bag drop desks two -three hours before your departure time. For flights within the UK and Europe, two hours will be plenty of time to cruise through the terminal. If you have checked in online and have no bags to drop, we reckon you can get away with being at security control three hours before a long-haul flight and two hours before domestic and European flights.

What is the difference between a nonstop, direct and connecting flight?
A nonstop flight is when you take off at your departure airport and land at your chosen destination without any stops in between.

A direct flight may include a change of aircraft, layover, or a refuelling stop, but despite their being a stop these flights are still called direct as their flight numbers do not change.

A connecting flight is if you have two different flight numbers, even if you have the same flight ticket. So, you may fly from Glasgow to London to catch your connecting flight to your final destination. Although, please note airlines are not able to hold your connecting flight if your previous flight is delayed, but they are required to get you out on the next available flight.

Am I entitled to a refund if my flight is delayed?
If you are departing from a European country on any airline or arriving into a European country on an EU-registered airline and your flight is delayed, you may be entitled to statutory compensation under EU regulations. You can find out more information about which flight providers are covered from the Civil Aviation Authority’s website.

Outside of European countries, when your flight is delayed or cancelled your rights vary depending on the terms and conditions of the airline. They may offer the choice between a later flight or a mutually agreed alternative transport or a refund. Some airlines may offer somewhere for customers to stay and vouches for refreshments.

Will my flight include Inflight meals?
If you are flying long-haul, meals and drinks are generally still provided. However, many airlines have stopped offering meals on short-haul international flights and domestic flights. Meals may still be available, but you will have to pay for them, and the selection will be limited.

What is my Luggage allowance?
Your luggage allowances for both checked-in and cabin luggage varies depending on the airline you are flying with, so it is important to check your airline’s requirements ahead of flying. You should also check with your airline for information on what can and cannot be taken in your cabin luggage.

Do I need to pay for a Seat Request?
Most airlines now offer allocated seating, meaning there is no longer a need to rush and be the first one on the plane. Depending on your chosen airline, this allocation may be free of charge or there may be a fee involved for this – even if you have chosen your seats prior to arriving at the airport, the airline still cannot guarantee them to you. For airlines where there is a fee to book a seat, there is usually the option to choose your seats for free at check-in – please bear in mind that the selection of seats will be limited so it is always a good idea to make your seat reservations as early as possible to guarantee that your party will be sat together.

How do I arrange airport assistance?
If you require airport assistance – for instance, if you require help getting around the airport, to the plane or to ensure you specific seating on the plane or for any medical needs you may have, please let us know and we will work with your airline and departure and arrival airports to ensure this is in place for the moment you arrive at the airport.
